Education – What Is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for cognitive decline that affects memory, behavior, and daily functioning. Understanding the types of dementia helps caregivers respond with confidence and compassion.


Types of Dementia:


  • Alzheimer’s (60–80%): Progressive loss of memory and thinking skills.
  • Vascular Dementia: Cognitive decline caused by poor blood flow to the brain.
  • Frontotemporal Dementia: Changes in personality, behavior, and language.
  • Wernicke–Korsakoff: Severe memory problems due to vitamin B1 deficiency.
  • Lewy Body Dementia: Fluctuating cognition with movement issues and hallucinations.
  • CTE: Brain degeneration from repeated head injuries.
